Coronavirus infection and pregnancy

Viral infections in pregnancy and puerperium remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. A variety of viruses have been shown to be culprits of adverse outcomes in pregnancy. In particular, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Influenza viruses, Cytomegalovirus, Varicella-Zoster Virus, Herpes Simplex Virus, Epstein-Barr Virus, Measles Virus, Rubella Virus, Zika Virus, Parvovirus B19 Virus, Coxsackie Viruses, Echoviruses, Hepatitis Viruses (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV) and Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus are all known to effect the health of pregnant mothers and potentially also the foetus. In addition, the new Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 also affects pregnant women however the specific impact is unclear. It is beyond doubt that the clinical impact of these infections is of paramount significance and therefore current information on outcomes, therapeutic interventions where available and preventive measures are of particular interest.

As such, this Research Topic aims to address the clinical impact of viral diseases in pregnancy and the puerperium by providing an overview of clinical outcomes (morbidity, mortality, prognosis) of the pregnant woman as well as of the embryo or infant, and further, therapeutic interventions including measures of prevention of the aforementioned viral diseases.
